Best known as the producing half of Merchant Ivory Productions, Ismail Merchant takes time out to direct The Mystic Masseur, a rags to riches tale of passion and self-invention. Reelwriter.net met up with Merchant at this year's Philadelphia Weekend Film Festival where he spoke about his technique of getting notable stars to work for not a lot of money. He also talked about the first time he met Paul Newman, and how he later got him to co-star in Mr. & Mrs. Bridge.
